Sunyani: The Total Family Health Organization (TFHO) marked World Condom Day with a significant campaign focusing on safe sex sensitisation and the distribution of condoms.
According to Ghana News Agency, the annual event, celebrated on February 13, aims to promote safe sex practices, prevent unplanned pregnancies, and reduce the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. This year's campaign specifically targeted traders, drivers, and the general public, providing crucial education on condom use, early signs of HIV, and the importance of knowing one's HIV status.
Mr Ahmed Bambila, a public health nurse from the Ghana Aids Commission in Sunyani, stressed that HIV is primarily transmitted through unprotected sex. He encouraged the prioritisation of health through safe sex and highlighted the importance of regular testing, noting that early symptoms of HIV often do not manifest.
Mr Joseph Addo-Yebo, the Executive Director of TFHO, stated that the day is about taking action as well as raising awareness. He emphasized the importance of creating access and partnerships to ensure condoms are readily available and normalized as a responsible choice for sexually active adults.
Additionally, he revealed that TFHO, which owns the Ebony Condom brand, is collaborating with organisers and entertainment venues to integrate safe sex messaging into edutainment activities at pubs, cinemas, and stage dramas. This approach aims to provide information in a relaxed and engaging environment.
Referencing a 2024 report from the Ghana Aids Commission, Mr Addo-Yebo noted that 334,721 people are living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana, with an alarming rate of 42 new infections daily. This statistic underscores the pressing need for promoting condom use across the country.
The sensitisation programme was also conducted concurrently in Kumasi Adum, Kasoa, Sunyani, and Madina, where public health officers educated residents and distributed condoms to further disseminate the message of safe sex.
In conclusion, the executive director affirmed that TFHO will continue engaging with the public beyond the celebration, reinforcing their commitment to promoting safe sex practices throughout the year.
