Tema: The Tema Executive Lions Club has officially handed over a refurbished 10-seater washroom facility to Republic Road Primary School in Tema. This initiative provides pupils with improved sanitation and aims to foster a healthier learning environment.
According to Ghana News Agency, the project involved the replacement of 10 toilet seats for both boys and girls, addressing a longstanding sanitation challenge. Previously, the poor condition of the washroom had forced some pupils to use nearby bushes. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Dr. Mrs. Rejoice Letsa Lawer, Charter President of the Tema Executive Lions Club, emphasized that the intervention sought to promote hygiene, protect pupils' health, and create a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
Dr. Lawer highlighted that inadequate sanitation facilities expose children to diseases and could adversely affect school attendance and academic performance. She noted that the project aligns with the club's commitment to community service and enhancing children's welfare, asserting that every child deserves access to safe and clean sanitation facilities. She urged pupils, teachers, and school authorities to maintain the facility to ensure its cleanliness and functionality for future generations.
Mrs. Mavis Jesse, the Headmistress of Republic Road Primary School, expressed gratitude to the Lions Club for the intervention, describing it as a timely contribution to the school's development. She stated that beyond improving infrastructure, the refurbished facility would promote hygiene, enhance pupils' health, and contribute to a better learning environment. Mrs. Jesse assured the club that school authorities would ensure proper maintenance of the washroom to guarantee its sustainability.
Mr. Francis Gashika, the School Improvement Support Officer for Community Seven and Republic Road, commended the Lions Club for supporting education and sanitation in the community. He acknowledged that while the government remains committed to improving educational infrastructure, partnerships with corporate bodies and service organizations are essential in addressing some challenges facing schools.
Mr. Anthony Sam Anoom, the Assembly Member for the Republic Electoral Area, also praised the club for the initiative and appealed for continued collaboration to support other infrastructure needs within schools in the area. Ms. Kate Baaba Hudson, a Past District Governor of Lions Clubs International, officially commissioned the facility and urged pupils to use it responsibly and maintain its cleanliness.
The event was attended by officials of the Tema Executive Lions Club and members of the Tema Greenwich Lions Club, who pledged their support for the project's sustainability.
