Sunyani: Basic school teachers at Atronie in the Sunyani Municipality of the Bono Region have expressed concern about the resurgence of armed robbery attacks on the Sunyani-Atronie stretch.
According to Ghana News Agency, the teachers, who preferred to remain anonymous, disclosed that the armed robbers frequently targeted a particular section of the road, which is notorious for poor telecommunication network access and its proximity to a forest.
The teachers' concerns stem from a deadly attack last year where armed robbers assaulted passengers, resulting in the death of a driver transporting them from Sunyani to Bibiani. This incident led the Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to implement security checks and increase police patrols along the Sunyani-Atronie Road.
However, the teachers have observed a decrease in police patrols recently, increasing their anxiety about safety. They urged REGSEC to reinstate the police patrols to curb the growing threat. Despite their concerns, the teachers acknowledged the government's efforts in re-shaping the Sunyani-Atronie Road and expressed hope for it to be asphalted soon.
In agreement with the teachers, Mr. Richard Adu, the Assembly Member for the Atronie Electoral Area, recounted a recent incident on Sunday, March 15, 2026, where armed robbers attacked travelers on the road, seizing money, mobile phones, and other valuables.
