Teacher Wrongfully Imprisoned for 10 Years Cleared by DNA Test in Sunyani

Sunyani: A video has surfaced online in which a prison officer has detailed how a teacher in Sunyani was sentenced to 25 years in prison for allegedly raping his student. In the video shared on X on August 7, 2026, the officer, whose identity was not disclosed, noted that the teacher was imprisoned after the student alleged that he had raped and impregnated her.

According to Ghana Web, the teacher had consistently denied the accusations of sexually assaulting the student and pursued an appeal after his case was dismissed by the High Court and Court of Appeal. The teacher eventually secured a hearing at the Supreme Court after spending 10 years in prison. During the Supreme Court proceedings, a DNA test revealed that the child was not fathered by the teacher.

'A case happened in Sunyani. A teacher was accused of raping a student, and as a result of the rape, the student became pregnant. He was sentenced to 25 years. He served 10 years and appealed against the sentence. His first appeal went to the Court of Appeal, but his appeal was thrown out. Then the case went to the Supreme Court.

'It was when the case went to the Supreme Court that the court asked for a DNA test. But the teacher consistently denied the rape. And so, they asked them to conduct a DNA test on the child. When the results came out, they did not match. The child was not the teacher's, but he had already spent 10 years [in prison],' he said.
