Accra: The Accra Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) Circuit Court has granted GHS200,000 bail with two sureties to Latifa Salifu, the suspect in the Mamprobi Hospital baby theft case. The decision comes after the 33-year-old was earlier remanded into police custody for two weeks, having been denied bail on February 20, 2026, following her arrest in connection with the alleged abduction of a four-day-old baby boy from the Mamprobi Hospital's postnatal ward earlier that week.
According to Ghana Web, Salifu was arrested by the Dansoman Divisional Police Command on February 18, 2026. The arrest occurred after reports emerged that a four-day-old infant was taken from the postnatal ward on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, by a woman disguised as a nurse. The baby's mother, Precious Ankomah, informed police that a woman dressed in a peach-colored nurse's uniform took her newborn under the pretext of administering medication before disappearing with the child.
Her defense counsel had prayed the court to grant her bail on the grounds that she has two children, aged seven and ten, who depend on her support. However, after hearing submissions from both the prosecution and the defense, the judge ordered that she be kept in custody to allow police investigations to proceed.
Dansoman Divisional Commander, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, addressed the media on February 18, 2026, stating that the police undertook a manhunt, and at about 3:40 AM on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, the suspect was found at the premises of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital with the baby, believed to be the missing child. Police disclosed that upon interrogation, Salifu claimed she had delivered at the hospital and was discharged due to a lack of bed space, but officers found no record to support her claim.
