Accra: The State Housing Company Limited is committed to completing all ongoing projects it inherited, some of which have been stalled or slowed down for over seven years. This effort aligns with the President's directive and aims to ensure that state funds are not tied up in abandoned projects.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. John S. Bawah, Managing Director of State Housing Company Limited, made this announcement during a sod-cutting event to commence the Green City housing project at Dedesua in the Ashanti Region. Mr. Bawah revealed that 300 housing units are scheduled for completion before the end of this year in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi. This initiative is expected to help reduce the over 1.8 million housing deficit in the country and explore innovations and collaborations with the private sector to lower construction costs and financial burdens for homeowners.
The company has also embarked on urban redevelopment projects in Kaneshie Estates, Adenta Estates, Effiakuma Estates in Takoradi, and Kanda Estates in Accra. These projects are crucial to the government's vision of repurposing aging government estates to provide more housing in urban centers. Additionally, under the Ministry of Works, Housing, and Water Resources, the company is involved in the Greenville District Housing project in the Tamale South Constituency, constructing 40 housing units.
Mr. Bawah stated that under the direction of Minister Ken Adjei, they are in the final stages of preparations to complete abandoned government affordable housing projects in Koforidua, Wa, and Tamale. They are currently working on seven regional head office buildings for the Ghana Immigration Service and residential apartments in Tamale and Takoradi.
Through the support of the Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, the company has reengineered the SHC portion of the Pokuase Housing Project, which was previously stalled. This project will deliver 1,544 apartments in three phases over 60 months. Negotiations with a financing contractor are nearing completion, enabling the project to commence soon.
Addressing financial constraints, the company introduced a Mortgage Services Function, partnering with Republic Bank and Ecobank to offer favorable mortgage financing for Ghanaians. The stability of the Ghana Cedi and dropping interest rates have facilitated more Ghanaians entering the property market.
The company has secured the renewal of head leases for critical estates, including Teshie Nungua Estates and Achimota Estates. A new 24-hour premium service center has been named in honor of the late Dr. Samuel Sarpong, acknowledging his contributions to the company.
State Housing Company Limited is expanding its operations to new regions, starting with the Savannah Region. The Green City project in Dedesua spans 200 acres, featuring various housing units and recreational facilities. Phase 1 will deliver 214 units by Q4 2027.
Mr. Bawah expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama, the local community, and private sector collaborators for their support. He requested a donation from the Big Push to cover infrastructure costs for the Green City project, emphasizing the company's commitment to affordable housing solutions.
