Accra: Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has commended Sheikh Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam, for his unwavering commitment to national unity and for taking personal steps to develop the Muslim community.
According to Ghana News Agency, during a courtesy visit to the Muslim Cleric and Leader at his residence in Accra on Thursday, the Speaker lauded the Chief Imam for his commitment to fostering national unity and for his proactive efforts in developing the Muslim community independently of government support. The visit aimed to fortify friendly relations and encourage the National Chief Imam in his role of deepening peace and national unity.
Speaker Bagbin further praised the Chief Imam for establishing offices and initiatives that have generated jobs and are proving beneficial for many Ghanaians. He urged other leaders to emulate the Chief Imam's self-motivated approach to community development. "The office you have opened has given jobs to a lot of people; it's bearing fruits," the Speaker noted. He added that the Chief Imam's humanitarian work through personal financial assistance was commendable, highlighting the national impact of such efforts.
In addition, Speaker Bagbin announced plans to support the Chief Imam's education trust fund with a proposed donation, suggesting it be named the 'Sunset Fund' to aid more children across the country in accessing education. He also reiterated Parliament's commitment to equally fund Muslim activities as it does for Christian activities.
The Speaker expressed gratitude to the Chief Imam for his continuous prayers, which he credited for contributing to the nation's peace and stability. He also commended the Chief Imam's prudent utilisation of national resources.
Addressing the LGBTQ bill, Speaker Bagbin reassured the Chief Imam that the pledge concerning the legislation would be fulfilled. While acknowledging the need for revisions, he expressed concern over the current draft, stating it did not align with the Chief Imam's advice. He revealed plans to refine the bill with the President's agreement, aiming to complete it before the parliamentary recess.
The Speaker concluded by praising the Chief Imam for his leadership on LGBTQ issues and overall management of community matters. In response, the National Chief Imam commended the Speaker for his stance on these issues and assured his continued support and prayers for the country's development.
