Abidjan: Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Kingsford Sumana Alban Bagbin, in January 2025, stated that one of the reasons the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the 2024 General Election was due to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's position on the Anti-Gay Bill. Delivering a speech to the Ghanaian community in C´te d'Ivoire, Bagbin stressed that it is Parliament - not the President - that holds the authority to pass laws.
According to Ghana Web, Bagbin highlighted that the LGBTQ bill was passed by Parliament, but the former president refused to assent to it, which he described as unconstitutional. He clarified that there is no law that permits the president to refuse or fail to assent to a bill passed by Parliament. Bagbin reiterated that Parliament is the authority for passing laws, not any other person, including the president. He remarked that the decision was wrong, and as a result, it led to the electoral punishment of Akufo-Addo.
Bagbin also expressed his intention to present the bill to President Mahama for assent after consulting with the new Attorney General and Minister of Justice. He conveyed confidence that the bill would be passed within the year, underscoring its importance. He announced plans to write to the new Attorney General and Minister of Justice for comments so the bill can be resent to the new president for assent. Bagbin insisted that it would not take long for the bill to be passed, emphasizing its significance as an anti-God measure. He noted his unwavering commitment to ensuring the bill's passage, even at the risk of his own life.
