Akropong-akuapem: A former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, is set to be installed as the Mmrahene of the Akuapem Traditional Area on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. This significant ceremony will coincide with the Awukudae celebration at the palace of the Okuapehene in Akropong-Akuapem, located in the Eastern Region.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Akuffo Descendants, who are the family of the late Okuapehene Nana Kwasi Akuffo I, announced the event in a statement. The statement emphasized the ceremony as a profound honor for both the family and the Akuapem Traditional Area. Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Akuffo, who has held numerous prestigious positions, including the former President of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights and Chairperson of the Governing Council of the University of Ghana, will now take on the traditional role of Mmrahene.
The day's events will commence at 0800 hours at Akuffo Fi, the traditional home of the Akuffo Descendants in Akropong-Akuapem. The main durbar is scheduled to start at 1000 hours at the Okuapehene's palace as part of the Awukudae festivities. During the installation ceremony, Sophia Akuffo, who will be known as Nana Abena Boafoa Akuffo, will be introduced to His Royal Majesty, Okuapehene Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III.
The statement extended an invitation to all Akuffo descendants and the general public to join in the celebration, marking an important occasion for the community.
