Accra: A young man whose mother is among the three confirmed dead in the Accra New Town building collapse has shared a heartbreaking account of how he received the news. Speaking with Accra-based TV3, he narrated that his mother was at home on Sunday morning when he left for church around 7 AM.
According to Ghana Web, while in a church meeting, he started getting several calls from his siblings. When he finally answered, he was informed about the collapse of the building where his mother had gone for service. He recounted leaving home early in the morning for church, with his mother still asleep. Later, he received multiple calls from his senior brother and younger sister, only to learn that the building where his mother's church was located had collapsed.
The young man revealed that his 17-year-old sister, who usually attends church on Sundays, refused to go that day. Their mother, frustrated, left for church alone. It was his sister who first heard about the collapse of the Accra New Town Experimental D/A School building, where their mother had gone for service. She rushed to the scene upon hearing a loud noise and people shouting that the church building had collapsed during service.
The young man, who was in Dansoman at the time, called his senior brother to confirm the news. Upon arriving at the scene, he found the street filled with people and rescue teams working to save those trapped. He did not see his mother at the scene but later met her body at the hospital mortuary.
His 17-year-old sister has been inconsolable since the incident, struggling to come to terms with the loss of their mother. The young man described his mother as a 58-year-old devoted Christian who was cheerful and loved by many, expressing his own struggle to accept her death.
