Somanya: The Somanya Magistrate Court, under the leadership of Mr. Peter Ametsowu, has handed down convictions to Korboe Timothy Padi, aged 18, and four other commercial motorcycle operators for a series of traffic-related offences. The individuals faced charges of operating without a licence, utilizing unregistered motorcycles, and parking in unauthorized zones.
According to Ghana News Agency, each of the five motorcycle taxi riders was fined GHS 360. Additionally, they were instructed to register their motorcycles before resuming their commercial activities. Non-compliance with the court's order could lead to further penalties. The charges against Padi and his fellow riders were based on three specific counts: Regulation 53 of Act 683 (2004), as amended by the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act 2008 (Act 761), for riding without a licence; Section 41(1) of Act 683, as amended by Act 761, for using unregistered motorcycles; and Regulation 187 of the Road Traffic Act 2012 [L.I. 2180] for illegal parking.
The prosecution, spearheaded by Superintendent Kingsley Abrokwa, the Somanya District Commander, revealed that the offences were committed on January 28, 2026, at approximately 1930 hours during a traffic management operation at the Somanya Roundabout. Superintendent Abrokwa pointed out that the riders were seen parking in areas not designated for commercial motorbikes, thereby posing safety risks to other road users.
He further elaborated that some riders were operating without licences and on unregistered motorcycles, which undermines road safety and exposes them to legal repercussions. The police officer stressed that enforcement of traffic regulations will persist throughout the municipality with the aim of ensuring compliance among commercial motorbike operators and reducing accident risks on the roads.
The court's decision underscores the necessity of adhering to traffic laws, ensuring proper motorcycle registration, and practicing responsible parking. It serves as a critical reminder to commercial motorbike riders in Somanya and surrounding areas to observe road safety regulations to safeguard themselves and the public.
