Accra: The Director of Communication for the United Party, Solomon Owusu, has stated his belief that a by-election will occur in the Asante Akim North constituency. This follows the arrest of its Member of Parliament in connection with an extradition case. Speaking on the issue on Joy Prime on May 16, 2026, Owusu expressed skepticism that the United States would undertake the extradition process unless a serious matter was involved.
According to Ghana Web, Owusu questioned the likelihood of the U.S. spending resources to extradite someone from Amsterdam to the United States without a significant reason. He also criticized certain public figures' lifestyles, suggesting that they mislead young people by showcasing wealth without revealing its source. Owusu emphasized that the situation should be a lesson for politicians and youth, advocating for system reforms and integrity in public office.
Owusu further mentioned that the MP had faced similar issues in the United Kingdom before returning to Ghana. He recounted that the MP had been arrested in the UK in connection with the same matter, underscoring the pattern of legal troubles faced by the MP. He expressed confidence that a by-election in Asante Akim North is inevitable, suggesting that the current situation is an opportunity to address systemic issues.
The NDC Majority has secured a lawyer for the detained MP, while Owusu urged young people to prioritize hard work and avoid activities that could jeopardize their future. He advised against being misled by appearances, advocating for a focus on genuine effort and integrity.
