Accra: Filmmaker and entertainment industry veteran Socrate Safo has strongly defended Ghana’s attention to popular American streamer Speed, describing it as a strategic tourism win rather than misplaced hype. Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie, Safo said critics questioning why Ghana devoted so much attention to the internet personality do not understand how the modern tourism industry works.
According to Ghana Web, Safo emphasized that the tourism industry has shifted from traditional methods to real-time online storytelling through social media. He highlighted the impact of Speed’s visit, noting that the streamer’s massive global following on platforms like YouTube and Twitch can bring significant attention to Ghana. “If you understand tourism, then you will know what it means to have somebody give you over 50 million eyeballs,” he said.
Safo explained that destination marketing has evolved beyond travel magazines and TV shows. He pointed out that having someone with a large online presence showcase a country can be more valuable than traditional promotion methods. “Years ago, tourism promotion was through travel magazines placed in hotel receptions. Today, technology allows people to see destinations live,” he stated.
He further elaborated on how tourists are drawn to places they feel a connection with, citing examples such as religious tourism in Mecca and Israel, wildlife tourism in East Africa, and recreational tourism in Dubai. Safo praised Ghana’s cultural presentation during Speed’s visit, commending organisers and content creators like Wode Maya for effectively showcasing the country.
“It showcased the country. I don’t see anywhere that we faulted. I think we gave one of the best presentations in all these 20 nations that he has gone to,” Safo remarked. He expressed pride in Ghana’s cultural representation and acknowledged the efforts of those involved in organising the visit, giving special mention to Wode Maya for his contribution.
