Accra: Ghanaian musician Showboy has voiced strong criticism against Accra Technical University (ATU), alleging that the institution invited him to perform at its 2026 SRC Artiste Night without any offer of payment.
According to Ghana Web, Showboy expressed his discontent during a TikTok Live session, questioning why a prominent tertiary institution would expect a performance for free, and suggesting that such an expectation undermines the value of his work as an artist. He further speculated whether the organizers harbored any dislike towards him to make such a request.
In his remarks, Showboy highlighted the potential for the school’s large student body to contribute financially, proposing that students could each pay GHS100 to cover his performance fee. He argued that such a collective effort would be more appropriate than expecting him to perform without compensation.
Showboy also noted that many of his peers perform at various tertiary events, often receiving only small payments. He criticized this trend, stating that the compensation offered frequently does not match the time, effort, and resources invested in preparing for live performances. He firmly stated his refusal to partake in events where he perceives that his work is undervalued or undercompensated, declaring that he would prefer to stay home rather than perform under such conditions.
