Accra: Prudential Life Insurance Ghana has launched the seventh edition of its annual PRURide Cycling Fun Ride and Elite Races, with the aim of promoting healthy living and environmental sustainability. The event, themed 'Pedal for Health, Ride for a Green Future,' is scheduled for August 22, 2026, at the University of Ghana, Legon, and September 6, 2026, at the Borteyman Stadium Traffic Light in Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, the launch event at the University of Ghana Stadium featured Mr. Richard Kofi Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), who commended Prudential Life Insurance for its ongoing support of cycling in Ghana. He encouraged the company to strengthen its partnership with the Ghana Cycling Federation to enhance the sport and improve Ghana's prospects for future Olympic qualification. Mr. Akpokavie emphasized the importance of developing a lasting partnership between Prudential and the cycling community.
Organisers of the PRURide event announced that winners of the 112-kilometre Elite Race in both men's and women's categories would receive trophies and cash prizes of GHS15,000 each. Cash rewards would also be given to cyclists finishing between second and tenth places, with special prizes for the oldest, youngest, and most outstanding riders. Participants in the 30-kilometre Fun Ride are set to receive medals.
Mr. Baba Tanko, Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, delivered a message on behalf of Sports Minister Kofi Adams, reaffirming the ministry's dedication to initiatives that promote sports participation and healthy lifestyles. Madam Jane Dornukuor Mingle, CEO of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, expressed confidence in attracting a larger number of participants this year, especially students.
Mr. Austin Luguthera, Director of Sports and Wellness at the University of Ghana Sports Directorate, revealed plans to establish a permanent cycling club at the university to compete in events organized by the Ghana Cycling Federation. He noted that the university sees sports as a crucial development tool and is committed to broadening opportunities for students through various sporting activities.
Representatives from the Ghana Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and the National Road Safety Authority also expressed their support for the event, ensuring safety and coordination for participants and attendees.
