Ada west: Mr. Mordzifa Tanihu Jerry John Foreigner Mills-Nkrumah, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ada West, has refuted allegations that Mr. Daniel Kesshi Bessey, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Sege Constituency, has neglected residents in the wake of recent floods that affected multiple communities in the district. The natural disaster, caused by prolonged heavy rainfall, has led to the submergence of homes, displacement of families, destruction of roads and farmlands, and disruption of economic activities, resulting in urgent calls for humanitarian relief and long-term flood prevention strategies.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Mills-Nkrumah, in a statement, clarified that although the MP was abroad at the time of the flooding, he maintained regular communication with the local assembly and remained informed about the developments. The MP's absence was due to his involvement with the Parliament of Ghana's Youth and Sports Committee delegation, supporting the Black Stars at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
Mr. Mills-Nkrumah emphasized that Mr. Bessey had left the country before the flooding began, thus explaining his physical absence during this critical period. 'I understand that constituents expect their Member of Parliament to be present to sympathize with flood victims. However, he has been in constant touch with me throughout this period,' Mr. Mills-Nkrumah said. He further elaborated that the MP frequently contacted him to discuss the situation and often provided information that was swiftly integrated into the assembly's response plans.
The DCE highlighted that the Ada West District Assembly, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other stakeholders, is spearheading the emergency response and implementing measures to aid the affected communities. He pointed out that while MPs have vital roles in legislation and advocacy for developmental projects, the primary responsibility for coordinating disaster response at the district level lies with the district assembly and relevant state agencies.
'The assembly is at the forefront of addressing the challenges facing affected communities. We are working to ensure that residents receive the necessary assistance while pursuing long-term solutions to the flooding problem,' he stated. Mr. Mills-Nkrumah urged residents to remain patient and continue cooperating with the assembly as relief and recovery efforts progress. He assured the public that the Sege MP would visit the affected communities upon his return to engage with victims and evaluate the damage.
