Accra: Savage 4 has officially released ‘Abonten’, a high-energy, culture-shifting record featuring Novelist and Smallgod.
According to Ghana Web, the track marks the first release from the GHRIME Riddims series, part of the wider Grime Frequency project-a body of work created over seven days in Accra during the festive period.
Produced by Novelist and executive produced by Smallgod, ‘Abonten’ is more than a song; it is a statement. It represents the birth of Ghana Grime (GHRIME), a new sound blending the raw DNA of UK grime with Ghanaian street culture, language, and energy. The title ‘Abonten’-meaning ‘outside’ in Twi-is a slogan long associated with Smallgod and forms the heart of the record’s message.
The track celebrates freedom, movement, and the realities of youth who spend their lives outside: hustling, creating, surviving, and having fun on their own terms. It captures the spirit of the streets with unapologetic energy and urgency. Notably, ‘Abonten’ also marks a historic moment as it is the first time Smallgod has ever appeared vocally on a record, adding weight and symbolism to the release. His presence, alongside Novelist and Savage 4, bridges generations, cultures, and cities from Accra to London and back.
“This project was about creating something real, fast, and honest,” says Savage 4. “Abonten represents our reality and the freedom of being outside-no rules, no limits.”
OG1 of S4, the founder and visionary of the collective, has been a central figure in the recent GH Grime explosion. Inspired by the rise of Stormzy and the grime subculture, OG1 pioneered a sound that merged UK energy with Ghanaian grit.
Big Dave, another member of Savage 4, is a UK-influenced Afro Grime artist from Tema, Ghana, blending raw street energy with African rhythm. His music is built on truth, hunger, and lived experience, with real-life stories wrapped in heavy militant flows.
BadBoy K, a founding member of the group, represents the pulse of Tema, Ghana, and the suburbs of Lagos, Nigeria. His sound is a relentless fusion of Afro-Grime and Drill, deeply rooted in the realities of the Ghanaian streets.
O’9, hailing from Tema’s gritty industrial landscapes, is a defining voice of Ghana’s new underground. He brings authenticity and street-hardened wisdom to his craft, architecting a movement through his music.
As the opening chapter of Grime Frequency, ‘Abonten’ sets the tone for what is to come: a series of releases designed to define, document, and export GHRIME as a new genre and movement rooted in Ghana, but global in ambition. ‘Abonten’ is now available on all major streaming platforms.
