Accra: Sam George, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, has indicated that MTN Ghana might secure a spectrum block in the forthcoming 5G auction. This comes as the government steps up efforts to enhance internet connectivity ahead of Ghana's 70th independence anniversary celebrations.
According to Ghana Web, during the launch of MTN Ghana's 30th-anniversary celebrations in Accra, the Minister emphasized the government's intention for MTN to be a pivotal player in the country's 5G rollout. The Cabinet has given its nod to remove previous restrictions that barred MTN from entering the 5G market, signaling a significant policy shift towards embracing advanced digital technology.
The Minister revealed that MTN has not only been allocated additional spectrum but has also been granted technology neutrality. He elaborated on the government's commitment to ensuring MTN's critical role in the 5G landscape, mentioning that the Cabinet had unanimously approved lifting the exclusivity arrangement that previously restricted MTN from participating in the 5G sector.
In addition to the auction, the Minister underscored the expectation for telecom operators to invest in rural and underserved communities, aligning with Ghana's broader digital transformation agenda. This move aims to balance the focus on profitable urban centers with the need for comprehensive connectivity across the nation.
George expressed optimism that the 5G services would be available nationwide by Ghana's 70th independence anniversary. He conveyed hope that MTN would secure a spectrum block in the upcoming auction, marking a significant milestone in the country's digital evolution.
