Accra: The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has issued a strong warning to the government over what he described as continued harassment and intimidation of party members. Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, during a courtesy visit by the NPP to the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Salam Mustapha accused the government of targeting members of the opposition party and cautioned that the NPP could respond forcefully if the situation persists.
According to Ghana Web, the party commands significant nationwide support and would not sit unconcerned while its members are allegedly persecuted. Salam Mustapha demanded the release of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, who is currently in custody. 'We are sending this warning and caution to the government to release Abronye; otherwise, should anything happen to Abronye in custody, you'll have us to contend with,' he added.
Salam Mustapha stressed that the party's patience was wearing thin and warned that continued pressure on NPP members could provoke a stronger reaction from the opposition. 'And this constant harassment and intimidation of NPP people, if you people don't stop it, we'll make sure that we react in such a way that you will not be happy with us,' he stated.
Despite the threats, the NPP Youth Organiser maintained that the party remains willing to support the government through constructive criticism and policy alternatives from the opposition bench. 'You have a country to govern and we are here to support you and give you the best of advice from opposition point of view. If you turn us into enemies, we will give you rebellion,' he said.
The comments come in the wake of Abronye DC's arrest on April 13, 2026, over allegations of offensive conduct likely to breach the peace and the publication of false statements against a judge. He was subsequently rearrested on May 13, 2026, and has since been detained at the Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI).
