Sagnarigu: The Sagnarigu Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has enforced a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Damankungyili, Nyeshie, and nearby communities within the Sagnarigu Municipality in the Northern Region. This measure comes in response to violent disturbances that resulted in one fatality and injuries to six individuals.
According to Ghana News Agency, the curfew will be effective daily from 1700 hours to 0700 hours until further notice. The decision was disclosed in a press statement following an emergency meeting by MUSEC, which was convened on Tuesday to evaluate the security situation after clashes between the two communities.
The statement, signed by Mr. Abdulai Imoro Gong, Chairman of MUSEC and Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive, emphasized the tragic and unacceptable nature of the incidents. It further explained that the curfew was implemented in consultation with the Northern Regional Security Council to restore calm, safeguard lives and properties, and prevent further conflicts.
In addition to the curfew, MUSEC has declared a total ban on carrying arms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons within the affected areas. There will also be increased joint Police patrols to ensure enforcement of the curfew and maintenance of law and order.
Residents have been urged to fully comply with the directives and cooperate with security agencies to facilitate a swift return to peace. The Council also called on the chiefs, elders, youth, and all residents of Damankungyili and Nyeshie to remain calm and refrain from actions that might escalate tensions.
Furthermore, the statement encouraged the public to provide credible information related to the disturbances to the Police to aid ongoing investigations. It also appealed to media organisations, particularly radio stations, to exercise restraint and professionalism in their reporting to prevent inflammatory commentary that could worsen the security situation.
