Accra: Legendary Ghanaian footballer, Rev Osei Kofi, has issued a caution regarding the Ghana Football Association's (GFA) ongoing search for a new head coach for the Black Stars. He urged the association to prioritize local coaches, asserting that all of Ghana's trophies, particularly the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), have been achieved under their guidance.
According to Ghana Web, Rev Osei Kofi emphasized that no foreign coach has ever led the Black Stars to victory in a major tournament. He highlighted the success of local coaches, using the late CK Gyamfi as an example. Gyamfi, the first Black coach to take over from foreign predecessors, successfully guided the team to win the 1963, 1965, and 1978 AFCON titles.
Rev Osei Kofi expressed concerns about the financial implications of hiring foreign coaches, suggesting that it does not contribute to the team's success. He attributed the inconsistent performances of the Black Stars to poor coaching, despite the nation's wealth of football talent. Kofi remarked on the need for unity within the team, stating that currently, the players operate more as individuals rather than as a cohesive unit.
