Accra: Retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba has criticized politicians for becoming inaccessible to the public after winning elections. Speaking at an event sighted by GhanaWeb on July 18, 2026, Justice Atuguba said many politicians make themselves available to voters during election campaigns but become difficult to reach once they assume office.
According to Ghana Web, Justice Atuguba raised concerns about the behavior of Ghana's 275 Members of Parliament, highlighting that during campaigns, politicians freely interact with people, join them in their daily activities, and present themselves as ordinary citizens to win their trust. He noted, "Elections are coming, the politicians are free with everybody, drinking palm wine, pounding fufu, washing clothes, more than people of the people. As soon as the results come, our calls will not be picked by the ministers or MPs."
Justice Atuguba further questioned why elected officials should become inaccessible after securing victory at the polls. He expressed his discontent, asking, "What kind of life is this? Just a day before, we're all one. Today, victory has come, you have no. I mean, is that how it should be?"
He emphasized that the relationship between politicians and the people should not end after elections, stressing that public office holders must remain available to the citizens they serve. This critique comes amid ongoing discussions about the effectiveness and accountability of Ghana's parliamentary system.
