Rethinking the Nature of Artificial Intelligence and Human Intelligence

Accra: The phrase 'Artificial Intelligence' may be one of the most misleading terms of the modern era. Embedded within those two words is an assumption so deeply ingrained that most people never stop to question it: that intelligence is naturally human and only artificially machine.

According to Ghana Web, this assumption may be fundamentally incorrect. Intelligence might never have belonged exclusively to humans; rather, it could be a phenomenon that emerges wherever information can be captured, remembered, interpreted, and applied. For centuries, humanity has centered itself in the concept of intelligence, treating it as a unique gift that separates us from other forms of life. However, nature has quietly questioned this belief for a long time.

Plants, animals, and other natural systems demonstrate abilities to sense, adapt, learn, and respond without possessing what we traditionally describe as human consciousness. This raises the question: if intelligence is not exclusively human, what makes machine intelligence "artificial"?

The term Artificial Intelligence, coined by early computer scientists, reflects historical rather than actual distinctions. Just as we don't label flight by airplanes as "artificial flight," perhaps intelligence should not be restricted to biological origins. Intelligence can be biological, organizational, collective, distributed, or computational, depending on its medium.

This distinction shifts the perspective on intelligence's future. Historically, intelligence was viewed as primarily an individual trait, but civilizations grew powerful through accumulated and transferable experience rather than individual brilliance. Intelligence may emerge wherever information, memory, feedback, and adaptation coalesce, whether in organisms, organizations, economies, civilizations, or machines.

This view challenges the belief that only humans can possess intelligence. Machines that outperform humans in specific domains often lead to reevaluations of what constitutes real intelligence. History shows that humanity has repeatedly underestimated intelligence that emerged in unfamiliar forms, and we may be making the same mistake with machines.

Modern AI systems have access to unprecedented amounts of accumulated knowledge, participating in humanity's knowledge loop at an extraordinary scale. Whether termed artificial, machine, or digital intelligence, the essence is that intelligence is no longer confined to biology.

This realization implies that institutions could potentially function as intelligence systems if they retain enough experience. Organizations often suffer from a lack of memory rather than intelligence, leading to repeated mistakes and relearned lessons. Creating systems capable of preserving context and accumulating experience might be a defining challenge of the twenty-first century.

Civilization itself functions as a distributed intelligence system, where intelligence emerges from shared memory and accumulated experience rather than individual possession. Intelligence, therefore, is a process that can emerge within various systems, whether biological or technological.

The challenge of our age may not be to build better AI, but to build better systems of memory and learning. Organizations, communities, and nations that learn fastest from accumulated knowledge may outperform those with greater wealth or resources. The future may belong to those who can best retain, refine, share, and apply intelligence.

The critical question may not be whether machines can think, but whether humanity has begun to understand the true nature of intelligence.
