Sunyani: Acting Rent Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, has voiced his frustration regarding the deplorable conditions of rooms being rented to students at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani. These rooms, located in a facility that appears to have been transformed into a private hostel, have come under scrutiny as part of efforts to address illegal rent charges.
According to Ghana Web, Opoku's visit to the facility revealed rooms partitioned with wooden boards into cramped spaces, prompting concerns about the safety and well-being of the students living there. The students are reportedly being charged as much as GHS2,000 for these accommodations, despite their inadequate condition.
The video circulating on social media also shows that the rooms suffer from poor lighting, and some wooden bunk beds appear to be in disrepair. In the footage, Opoku can be seen questioning a man associated with the facility about the substandard conditions and the high rent charged to students. He further challenged the man by asking if he would allow his own child to reside in such conditions.
Opoku's comments underscore the urgency of addressing the issue, as he highlighted the lack of lighting and the unfairness of charging students GHS2,000 for what he referred to as "rubbish" accommodations. The incident has sparked a wider conversation about student housing conditions and rent regulation in the area.
