Queiroz Names 23-Man Squad for Ghana’s Friendly Against Mexico on May 22

Accra: Head Coach Carlos Queiroz has announced a 23-man squad for the Black Stars' international friendly against the Mexico national team scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2026.

According to Ghana News Agency, the squad comprises foreign-based professionals, standout performers from the Ghana Premier League, and a few promising U-23 players. This selection is part of Ghana's preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the upcoming Olympic Games qualifiers.

Notable returnees to the squad include Majeed Ashimeru and Felix Afena-Gyan. Ashimeru is making his comeback following a long period on the sidelines due to a muscle injury that limited his appearances for both club and country. Afena-Gyan returns after last featuring for Ghana in May 2025 against Trinidad and Tobago at the Unity Cup in London.

Several emerging talents have earned call-ups due to their impressive performances at the club level. These include Abdul Aziz Issah of Barcelona B, Birmingham City winger Ibrahim Osman, Joseph Opoku, and Ebenezer Annan of AS.

The squad also features home-based players, with Medeama SC midfielder Salim Adams leading the local contingent. He is joined by Nations FC captain Razak Simpson, Heart of Lions' Ebenezer Abban, and Dreams FC's Ebenezer Adade.

In the goalkeeping department, Solomon Agbasi, Paul Reverson of Ajax FC, and Gidios Aseako have been selected. The defensive lineup includes Nathaniel Adjei, Oscar Oppong, and Annan. Midfield creativity and control are expected from players like Emmanuel Edjei, Augustine Boakye, and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi. The attack will be spearheaded by Afena-Gyan, Osman, Prince Amoako, and Francis Amuzu.

Key senior players such as Thomas Partey and Jordan Ayew have been left out, as Queiroz aims to assess squad depth and provide opportunities to younger players ahead of the World Cup. The friendly is part of Ghana's build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they are drawn in a group with Panama, England, and Croatia.
