Accra: Ghanaian singer and songwriter, Ethel Esi Eshun, popularly known as Queen eShun, has issued a warning to upcoming artistes about the potential pitfalls of record label contracts, which she describes as 'death traps' that can restrict their artistic freedom. She urges musicians to take control of their careers and manage their own affairs.
According to Ghana Web, Queen eShun voiced her concerns during an appearance on Starr Showbiz with Feeling Daddy on Starr 103.5 FM. She shared her personal experience with record labels, explaining that self-management proved to be more beneficial for her. 'I realised that managers are looking at their interests, and sometimes that can affect you even more,' she stated. She highlighted that these contracts can trap artistes for long periods and limit their ability to release music, creating a restrictive environment.
Queen eShun acknowledged that while collaborations with managers or distribution companies can be advantageous, it is crucial for artistes to thoroughly understand any agreements before signing. She advised upcoming musicians to consult lawyers to review contracts, as hidden clauses can trap artistes upon signing. Reflecting on her career, she mentioned operating independently as 'Queenie Shawn Music' after pausing music for school, which allowed her to manage her affairs and maintain creative control.
She also pointed out that conflicts might arise when a manager's interests clash with an artiste's vision, affecting style, genre, or career direction. 'If you don't get a team that understands you, your brand, your style, your goal, your voice, your power, it will mess you up,' she warned.
This advice serves as a reminder to emerging musicians to scrutinize management and recording contracts, prioritize their artistic freedom, and take responsibility for their professional paths.
