Public Urged to Prioritize Regular Health Check-Ups for Disease Prevention

Tema: Mr. Mershack Bankam, a Physician Assistant at HealthWise Hospital, has emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups for the public to transition from reactive, symptom-based care to a more proactive and preventive health management approach.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Bankam highlighted the critical role of routine medical screenings in identifying silent but potentially serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers at an early stage before they progress to advanced stages.

In an interview, he explained that many life-threatening diseases often do not present symptoms during their early and most treatable stages. He stated, "Early detection allows doctors to assess risk factors and recommend appropriate lifestyle adjustments before complications set in."

The benefits of preventive health assessments, as noted by Mr. Bankam, include opportunities for individuals to review their diet, increase physical activity, and adopt healthier lifestyles to mitigate the risk of chronic illnesses.

He further elaborated that consistent medical reviews contribute to creating a documented health history, encompassing blood pressure readings, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar measurements. This makes it easier for healthcare providers to identify subtle but concerning changes over time.

Moreover, Mr. Bankam emphasized that early detection and management of diseases are generally less costly than treating advanced conditions, which often require prolonged and expensive interventions.

He advised that individuals with a family history of chronic illnesses or existing medical conditions should visit a healthcare provider at least once a year, or every six months, based on medical advice.

Mr. Bankam concluded by stressing that medical check-ups are not solely for the ill, stating, "A check-up is preventive maintenance for your body. It ensures a longer and healthier life." He encouraged the public to prioritize routine health assessments as a vital component of responsible self-care and long-term wellbeing.
