Wasa akropong: The Assembly Member for Wasa Nananko Electoral Area, Pious Ampong, has raised concerns over what he describes as the unapproved construction of a 2-unit Kindergarten block at Wasa Akropong A by the Wasa Amenfi East Municipal Assembly. In a press release issued on April 23, 2026, Ampong said the project was not captured in the approved 2026 Municipal Composite Budget Statement of the Assembly.
According to Ghana Web, Ampong stated that the only approved Kindergarten block projects in the 2026 budget are located at Wasa Afransie and Subri Nkotie, while the only approved Junior High School block is earmarked for Wasa Adondoi. He emphasized that any expenditure outside the approved budget raises serious concerns about compliance with public financial management laws and local governance procedures.
Ampong cited Section 98 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921) and Section 16 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), which require that all public expenditures be included in approved budgets and authorised by the General Assembly. He therefore called on the Municipal Assembly to immediately halt work on the project and publicly disclose the source of funding as well as the approval documentation for the construction.
The Assembly Member further demanded that the issue be referred to the Finance and Administration Sub-Committee for review. 'I support educational infrastructure in Nananko. However, due process, transparency and accountability must guide all developments,' he stated.
He warned that projects executed outside the approved 2026 budget framework risk undermining public confidence and disrupting proper development planning. Ampong also appealed to the Municipal Coordinating Director, the Municipal Chief Executive and the Western Regional Coordinating Council to investigate the matter and ensure full compliance with the budget approved by the General Assembly on October 30, 2025.
