Professor Advocates for Support to Mothers of Persons with Disabilities in Ghana

Accra: Professor Augustina Naami, an Associate Professor of disability and social work at the University of Ghana, has called on Ghanaians to provide support to mothers of persons with disabilities. She emphasized the unique challenges these mothers face in nurturing children with disabilities and highlighted the need for societal support to help them thrive. According to Ghana News Agency, Professor Naami pointed out the limitations faced by mothers of children with disabilities and mothers who themselves have disabilities. She noted that these challenges often hinder their ability to work and earn a living. To address these issues, she proposed the establishment of resource centers aimed at fostering inclusion and leadership among women with disabilities. During a Mother's Day event organized by the Voices of Women and Children with Disabilities in Ghana (VOWAC, Ghana), Professor Naami urged the government to expedite the re-enactment of the Persons with Disability law and to ratify the African Disability Protocol. The event celebrated the strength, resilience, and courage of women with disabilities and caregivers of children with disabilities. Mr. Edwin Andoh, Executive Secretary of the National Council on Persons with Disabilities, echoed the call for collective efforts to support mothers of children with disabilities. He emphasized that Mother's Day should inspire policies that aid mothers with disabilities and caregivers in their roles. Representing the Vice President of Ghana, Ms. Shamima Muslim, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, reiterated the government's recognition of the vital role played by caregivers within society and the care economy. She stated that the government would continue to engage with stakeholders to enhance caregiver support services, mental health resources, and public awareness on shared caregiving responsibilities. Ms. Christiana Nkrumah, Board Secretary of VOWAC Ghana, stressed that disability should not be a barrier to parenting, leadership, or participation in society. She cal led for collective efforts from policymakers, service providers, civil society organizations, and communities to create an inclusive environment for mothers with disabilities and caregivers. The event honored approximately 30 mothers with disabilities and caregivers who have overcome significant challenges in their parenting journeys.
