Atebubu: Mahamadu Gariba Kirror, a suspected highway robber, has been shot dead by the Police. A police brief on Monday stated that Kirror was alleged to be part of a robbery gang responsible for the murder of a mini-van driver and a passenger during an attack on commuters along the Atebubu-Yeji Highway on January 29, 2026.
According to Ghana News Agency, Kirror was apprehended on January 31, 2026, at approximately 10:30 AM, following intelligence reports. Upon arrest, police discovered a locally manufactured pistol, two live BB cartridges, a Samsung Galaxy A07 mobile phone, two keypad mobile phones, and a talisman in his possession. Investigations revealed that the Samsung Galaxy A07 belonged to Ms. Nadia Haruna, a Yeji resident, who identified it as stolen property from the robbery.
The robbery incident reportedly occurred at about 10:15 PM on January 29, when a mini-van with registration number AS-6444-14, carrying passengers along the Atebubu-Yeji stretch, was attacked. The driver and a passenger, Hafisa Owusu Haruna, were both fatally shot.
During interrogation, Kirror confessed his involvement in the robbery and named Umaru, Issifu, Furgur, Ibrahim, Shaibu, and Yelow as his accomplices. On February 1, 2026, at around 7:45 PM, Kirror led Police officers to a bush in the Atebubu Municipality, intending to apprehend his accomplices. However, as they approached the hideout, Kirror attempted to escape into a nearby forest. Police fired shots to prevent his escape, resulting in gunshot injuries.
Kirror was transported to the Atebubu Government Hospital for medical treatment but was pronounced dead by the on-duty medical officer. His body has been placed in the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Meanwhile, police efforts continue to capture the remaining accomplices identified by the deceased suspect.
