Accra: The worlds of artificial intelligence (AI) and strategic cognitive development converged as Pi Chess successfully hosted the inaugural AI and Chess Festival at the Accra AI Community Centre.
According to Ghana News Agency, the 12-hour event, spearheaded by Madam Gertrude Banini, Chief Executive Officer of Pi Chess, was made possible through exclusive financial sponsorship and venue support from Google. The festival aimed to use the ancient game of chess as a practical framework to demystify artificial intelligence for the public, focusing on algorithmic thinking, distributed processing, and rapid pattern recognition.
Madam Gertrude Banini stated that chess is far more than just a board game; it is the foundational blueprint for how machines learn and process complex information. She emphasized that partnering with Google created a unique environment where young minds, tech professionals, and chess masters could interact with the logic that underpins the future of technology.
The festival drew an impressive 123 attendees and featured 80 active competitors across three distinct tiers, including a FIDE-standard Junior Tournament aimed at youth empowerment. Other competitions included an afternoon Beginners Tournament and a high-stakes Masters Rapid session, catering to players of different skill levels.
Madam Banini highlighted that the activities underscored Pi Chess's commitment to inclusive tech education, achieving a milestone with 39 percent female attendance and breaking traditional gender barriers in both the tech and chess communities. The corporate-community synergy was further demonstrated when Google staff members participated in a rapid "Crash Course" and competed in their first Beginners Tournament.
Beyond competitive play, participants engaged in interactive tech activities such as the "Puzzle Storm Challenge" to test cognitive agility and "Hand and Brain" variants to simulate distributed neural networks. A life-sized Giant Chess installation and an interactive "Human versus Machine" demo station allowed players of all levels to test their logic directly against AI algorithms throughout the day.
The success of the AI and Chess Festival has positioned the Accra AI Community Centre as a vibrant hub for innovation and set a new benchmark for corporate partnerships in the country. Pi Chess has pledged to continue bridging youth development and the tech sector under Banini's leadership.
