Accra: Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman, Paul Afoko, has emphasized the necessity of unity within the party, asserting that without it, the NPP will struggle to regain power in the 2028 general elections. Afoko made these remarks while engaging with NPP Regional Executives in Greater Accra, as part of his ongoing consultations ahead of a potential return to active leadership in the party.
According to Ghana Web, Afoko acknowledged that no individual possesses a "magic wand" to secure victory for the party, stressing that collective effort is crucial. Despite his age, Afoko is determined to embark on a "mission" to help rebuild and reposition the NPP. He introduced his 3Rs agenda-Reunite, Rebuild, and Recapture-as a strategy for the party's resurgence.
On the aspect of reunification, Afoko highlighted the persistent divisions within the party, which have led to voter apathy and loss of support. He noted that these divisions have caused the party's electoral challenges, citing instances of abstention and even cross-voting to the opposition. Afoko has attempted to reach out to members who have distanced themselves from the party, advocating for unity as the first step towards recovery.
In terms of rebuilding, Afoko stressed the importance of strengthening the party at the grassroots level. He recalled his tenure as chairman, during which he mandated the opening of bank accounts for polling stations and constituencies, a move that initially faced resistance but proved beneficial as party funds increased.
Finally, Afoko urged the party to focus on recapturing power, emphasizing that remaining in opposition would hinder the implementation of the party's ideas and values, which he believes are beneficial for the country. He underscored the urgency of regaining power to realize the party's vision for national development.
