Accra: Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman, Paul Afoko, has admitted that the party has lost significant ground since his time as chairman, as he continues his consultations with regional executives ahead of a possible return to active politics. Afoko made the frank assessment during his engagement with NPP Regional Executives in Greater Accra.
According to Ghana Web, Afoko reflected on the solid foundation laid during his tenure as National Chairman, when the party was fully prepared for the general elections. He noted the near-victory the party experienced but acknowledged that internal reasons prevented them from reaching their promised goals. Despite this, Afoko emphasized his continued commitment to the party, describing it as a deliberate choice to remain silent due to the pain he experienced at the time.
Afoko recounted how he broke his silence after the NPP's return to power, facing criticism for defending the new government. He used an analogy to explain the need for patience, likening the state to a super tanker that requires time to change course. This negative reaction to his comments drove him back into silence, though he continued to support party members quietly, including assisting some in getting into parliament.
The former chairman's engagement with Greater Accra executives is part of a broader effort to reunite and rebuild the NPP in light of its recent electoral challenges.
