Accra: Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has assured the National Chief Imam that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, will be reconsidered and passed again before Parliament goes on recess. Speaker Bagbin hinted that there is even a likelihood of the Bill being passed on Friday, July 31, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, during a visit to the National Chief Imam on Thursday, July 30, 2026, Alban Bagbin expressed dissatisfaction with the sentencing provisions in the Bill in its current form. Consequently, it will be reintroduced for further consideration of three key clauses. Bagbin mentioned that he had communicated his concerns to the President, who agreed with his perspective, and emphasized the intention to finalize the Bill before the recess.
Bagbin urged citizens to disregard any politicization of the Bill's passage, asserting that failure to pass the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill would equate to defying God's decree. He stated that the Bill was not a political issue and that its passage had broad support from various religious and non-religious groups.
Previously, on Friday, May 29, 2026, Parliament passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, after adopting several amendments. The revised legislation exempts certain professionals, such as lawyers, journalists, and medical personnel, from sanctions when providing services to LGBTQ individuals.
The Minority Caucus had opposed the amendments, citing flaws in the earlier version of the Bill and calling for new amendments. Despite their objections, Parliament approved the Bill and passed it into law, pending remaining constitutional processes.
