Paga: The Paga Youth Movement (PAYOM) has stepped up its efforts to promote peace and community development by hosting the 5th Edition of its Inter-Community Unity Games. This annual event is designed to foster peaceful coexistence, unity, discipline, and youth empowerment among the communities within the Kassena-Nankana West District.
According to Ghana News Agency, the games have emerged as a unifying event for the youth and residents, drawing 13 teams from various communities to participate in football and other recreational activities aimed at building friendships and enhancing social cohesion. The opening match saw the Zenga Community securing a decisive 4-0 victory over the Bisawo Community, setting a positive tone for the tournament.
Mr. Wenawome Aborah, Chairman of the Paga Youth Movement, emphasized during the opening ceremony that the competition transcends sports and entertainment. It serves as a tool for promoting peace, tolerance, and unity among the people. He highlighted the importance of collective action in fostering communal growth and urged the youth to contribute towards maintaining peace, protecting public property, and fighting drug abuse.
Mr. Aborah also praised the contributions of individuals, businesses, and institutions to Paga's development. He acknowledged Dr. Ama Antwiwaa Adu-Appiah for her dedication as the sole doctor at Paga Hospital. He assured visitors and investors that Paga is a welcoming community that values diversity and mutual respect.
The active involvement of women in this year's games, especially in social activities like penalty shootouts, sack races, and tug of peace, was commended, with Mr. Aborah noting their participation as a source of excitement and unity.
Mr. Thomas Awiah, an Elder of PAYOM, lauded the leadership for sustaining the initiative and using sports to positively project Paga across the Upper East Region. He urged all participants to maintain discipline and compete for the prestigious 'Best Behaved Team' award.
The PAYOM Inter-Community Unity Games continue to serve as a platform for strengthening social ties, resolving community tensions, and promoting youth participation in development through sports and peaceful engagement.
