Key Measures Outlined for Success of Ghana’s TRAFFITECH-GH Traffic System

Accra:Economist and political risk specialist Dr. Theo Acheampong has identified five crucial measures that will determine the success of Ghana’s newly launched automated traffic enforcement system, TRAFFITECH-GH. The system, which was rolled out on November 1, 2026, aims to reduce road accidents and improve driver discipline in the country.

According to Ghana Web, Dr. Acheampong emphasized that while the introduction of traffic cameras is beneficial, the overall effectiveness of TRAFFITECH-GH will depend on the government's ability to address existing road infrastructure challenges and ensure fairness in enforcing traffic regulations.

Dr. Acheampong highlighted that simply installing cameras will not resolve the country's road safety issues. He pointed out the necessity of proper road markings and functioning traffic lights to avoid unfair penalties for drivers. Additionally, he called for clear speed limit information and an online map to help motorists adhere to traffic regulations.

Moreover, he stressed the importance of improving vehicle registration records to ensure that traffic fines are accurately assigned to the correct vehicle owners. Dr. Acheampong also advocated for a transparent appeals process, where motorists can access evidence and contest wrongful fines, fostering public confidence in the system.

Lastly, he urged that revenue from traffic fines should be directed towards road safety improvements rather than serving as a government income source. Dr. Acheampong recommended establishing a dedicated Road Safety Fund for this purpose and suggested the introduction of penalty points on driving licenses to ensure accountability for traffic offenders. These measures, he believes, are essential for making TRAFFITECH-GH effective and fair, ultimately protecting lives on Ghana's roads.
