Sunyani: More than 100 residents in the Sunyani Municipality are currently undergoing free surgeries to treat conditions such as hernia, hydrocele, lipomas, breast tumors, and other bodily lumps. This initiative aims to enhance the health of the community.
According to Ghana News Agency, health professionals at Rafchick Hospital in Abesim, near Sunyani, led by Dr. Philip Anokye, Clinical Coordinator at the Chiraa Government Hospital, are performing the surgeries. The effort mainly targets women and children and is part of a health outreach exercise organized by the hospital in partnership with the Bono Regional office of the National Health Insurance Authority.
Mr. Seid Mubarack, the Member of Parliament for Sunyani East Constituency, is funding the 10-day health outreach exercise. The initiative is designed to help residents become aware of their health conditions. Dr. Anokye emphasized the importance of the exercise, noting that many women live with untreated hernia and breast tumors due to the prohibitive cost of surgery. Delays in surgical interventions can exacerbate these conditions, leading to significant health challenges.
Dr. Anokye also addressed the issues of stigmatization and discrimination faced by individuals with conditions like breast tumors and hydrocele. He urged the public to provide support rather than stigmatize those affected, dispelling misconceptions linking these conditions to spirituality.
In a separate interview, Dr. Luis Anto, CEO of Rafchick Hospital, encouraged individuals with these medical conditions to take advantage of the opportunity. He highlighted that advancements in medicine and technology have made surgery less daunting and more accessible.
Madam Brakisa Agyeman, Nurse in-charge at Rafchick Hospital, reassured patients and encouraged them to undertake the surgery. She expressed gratitude to the MP for addressing the beneficiaries' needs, noting that many have successfully recuperated.
Mad Comfort Tutuwaa, a 73-year-old beneficiary, shared her appreciation for the MP's assistance. She revealed that her hernia was diagnosed 15 years ago, but financial constraints prevented her from undergoing surgery until now.
Mr. Simon Laribik, Accountant at Rafchick Hospital, provided an overview of the hospital's services, including dialysis, antenatal and post-natal care, gynecology, and ambulance services.
