Kumasi: Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has called on government appointees to justify the trust placed in them by President John Dramani Mahama, stating that the President is unable to manage every sector of the nation's development single-handedly. The Asantehene made these remarks during a meeting at the Manhyia Palace where the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, provided updates on key reforms and progress within Ghana's health sector.
According to Ghana Web, the Asantehene emphasized that ministerial appointments are a chance to serve the nation and enhance the lives of its citizens. He noted that public officials who excel in their duties will leave a lasting impact on Ghana. "If you distinguish yourself, your name will be etched in the minds of Ghanaians," he stated. He also warned appointees to be cautious of unreliable acquaintances who might undermine their efforts and advised them to remain vigilant throughout their tenure.
In addition, the Asantehene urged successive governments to focus on completing ongoing development projects instead of neglecting them with each change in administration. He highlighted that continuity in public infrastructure projects would speed up national development and prevent the misuse of public resources. "If every new government commits to completing inherited projects, it will ensure that they are put to good use and help fast-track the progress of the nation," he said.
During the meeting, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh informed the Asantehene of significant initiatives being undertaken by the government to enhance healthcare delivery. The minister elaborated on the Free Primary Healthcare Policy, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), and strategies to address the backlog of over 100,000 unemployed health workers inherited by the current administration. Akandoh stressed that free primary healthcare is crucial for achieving universal health coverage and is meant to complement the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Plans are in place to acquire additional medical equipment and supplies to bolster health facilities nationwide.
Regarding the Agenda 111 hospital project, Akandoh disclosed that the government plans to complete 35 hospital projects, including facilities at Trede and Oforikrom in the Ashanti Region. He also updated on the progress of the Sewua Regional Hospital, mentioning ongoing construction of access roads and the extension of utilities to the facility. Akandoh expressed confidence that President Mahama would inaugurate the hospital during his next visit to the Ashanti Region.
