Kumasi: The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has authorized the Queen Mother of the Agona Traditional Area, Nana Acheamponmaa Ntansa Yiadom, to nominate a suitable candidate for the vacant male stool.
According to Ghana Web, the Asantehene issued this directive on May 4, 2026, during a meeting with the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace. The report further notes that Nana Acheamponmaa Ntansa Yiadom and her advisors have been given a two-week deadline to propose the rightful candidate to the traditional council.
This directive follows a four-year delay in appointing a successor to the late Nana Frimpong Anokye Ababio. It also follows the exclusion of a faction of the Agona royal family from the stool. In July 2025, the excluded royals submitted a plea to the Asantehene, seeking a reversal of their ban. The petition was presented through the Tepahene, Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem.
As a condition for reconsidering the plea, Otumfuo instructed the Tepahene to retrieve the Komfo Anokye Amoampong deity, allegedly seized by the group. It was alleged that the group intended to retain the deity within their jurisdiction if they failed to secure the Agonahene stool for one of their members. The Asantehene questioned the group's lack of remorse and refusal to return the property.
The Tepahene, tasked with mediating the issue, informed the Asantehene that his efforts to resolve the matter were unsuccessful. According to Nana Atwenewa Ampem, attempts to recover the stool were futile as the group reportedly denied possession of it. Consequently, he withdrew from the case.
After examining the genealogy of the Agona stool, Otumfuo rebuked the group for their behavior, describing it as unacceptable.
