Accra: The Independent Vetting and Elections Committee for the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) has announced the list of candidates approved to contest the upcoming elective congress on Saturday. Among those cleared is the current President, Frederick Lartey Otu, who is aiming for a third term.
According to Ghana News Agency, Otu has been approved to compete in the presidential election against Charles Tsibo Cromwell. This election is set for July 18, 2026, at the Media Centre of the Accra Sports Stadium. The presidential race is anticipated to be a focal point as delegates decide on a new executive board to guide the federation's activities for the next four years.
In addition to the presidential race, three candidates-Hamidu Abdel-Fatao, Martin Prince Oppong, and Maxwell Theodore Alornyo-have received approval to vie for the vice-presidential position. Several other candidates are also in the running for spots on the federation's executive board.
A total of 27 delegates are expected to cast their votes in these elections. The outcome is anticipated to significantly influence the strategic direction of taekwondo in Ghana, with an emphasis on grassroots development, enhancing international competitiveness, and ensuring athlete welfare.
The elections are being overseen by an Independent Vetting and Elections Committee, led by Lawrence Osei-Boateng from the Ghana Free Zones Authority. Other committee members include Mohammed Muniru Kassim, Secretary-General of the Ghana Olympic Committee, and Hussein Akueteh Addy from the National Sports Authority, with Cynthia Wintima serving as the committee's secretary.
