Accra: The Oti Regional Health Directorate is in urgent need of an additional 3,592 health personnel to effectively run its health facilities, as revealed by Dr Kofi Amo-Kodieh, the Oti Regional Director of Health Services. The staffing shortage has been identified as a significant barrier to providing effective healthcare in the region amidst growing demand for health services.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Amo-Kodieh emphasized that filling this gap requires recruiting individuals from various professional categories to bolster the capacity of health facilities. This move aims to enhance service delivery and ensure timely, quality care for patients. He highlighted that addressing the human resource gap would alleviate pressure on current health workers, improve efficiency, and elevate the quality of healthcare delivery in the region.
Dr Amo-Kodieh noted that the challenge extends beyond simply increasing the numbers; it involves ensuring that the right mix of professionals is available at health facilities to meet specific service demands. He called upon the government, relevant ministries, agencies, development partners, and other stakeholders to assist in addressing the human resource needs of the region.
Adequate staffing, Dr Amo-Kodieh added, is crucial for maintaining progress in maternal and child health, disease prevention, and control, alongside other health initiatives in the region. He also stressed the importance of improved logistics, infrastructure, and accommodation for health personnel, noting that adequate staff must be supported by a conducive working environment and resources.
The need for additional motorbikes, boats, and service vehicles was also highlighted to aid supervision, outreach, and healthcare delivery, especially in remote communities. Dr Amo-Kodieh affirmed the Directorate's commitment to improving health outcomes and ensuring equal access to quality healthcare services for all residents in the region.
He urged traditional authorities, civil society organizations, development partners, and other stakeholders to continue collaborating with the Ghana Health Service to meet the region's pressing healthcare needs. A coordinated approach to human resources, logistics, and infrastructure is deemed essential for strengthening the health system and enhancing healthcare outcomes in the Oti Region.
