Kumasi: Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) vice presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called on the people of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region to renew their commitment to strengthening the party as it prepares for its next political chapter. He emphasized the region's historical significance in the NPP's political tradition and urged the current generation to build on the work and sacrifices of its predecessors.
According to Ghana Web, Dr Opoku Prempeh, in a Facebook post, highlighted the importance of Kumasi's past efforts in sustaining the political tradition through difficult periods. He noted that past generations organized meetings, contributed resources, and maintained the party's structures even when the NPP was in opposition. He stressed that the current generation has a responsibility to continue building the party rather than relying solely on past achievements.
Dr Opoku Prempeh called for the Ashanti Region to strengthen its constituencies, reconnect with the grassroots, and bring younger people into the party to develop a new generation of organizers. He advocated for embracing new ideas and leveraging the strength of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region to fortify the NPP across Ghana.
He further emphasized that every generation receives both an inheritance and an assignment, urging the region to consider its contributions to the NPP's future under the leadership of its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. He noted the evolution of the NPP's political tradition through movements such as the National Liberation Movement (NLM), the United Party, and the Progress Party before its renewed expression in the NPP in 1992.
Dr Opoku Prempeh cautioned against viewing the Ashanti Region's relationship with the NPP solely in terms of electoral support. He remarked that the term "NPP's World Bank" may sound colorful but does not capture the depth of the region's historical ties with the party. He concluded by urging the current generation of NPP supporters in Kumasi and the Ashanti Region to take up the responsibility of organizing and building upon their inheritance to position the party for its next phase.
