Assin aworoso: A 28-year-old okada rider, Kofi Adisco, has drowned in the River Onwa at Assin Aworoso in the Assin South District of the Central Region during a swimming competition. The tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, after Adisco and 11 other commercial motorbike riders reportedly organized a group meal and subsequently went to the riverside for a swim.
According to Ghana Web, eyewitnesses recounted that the group transformed their outing into a swimming competition. However, Kofi Adisco failed to resurface after diving into the river, leading to fears that he had drowned. Attempts by his colleagues to rescue him were unsuccessful, prompting them to alert community elders.
Assembly Member for the area, Akwasi Korankye, confirmed the incident, noting that he had seen the riders earlier in a convoy, honking as they made their way to the riverside. About three hours later, he received reports that one of the riders had drowned. In response, a search party was organized after traditional leaders performed libation rites, though efforts to retrieve the body on the first day were unsuccessful.
The search resumed the following day with assistance from the Ghana Police Service, eventually leading to the recovery of Adisco's body. According to Korankye, the deceased sustained a head injury, raising suspicions that he may have hit a rock while diving. The body has been deposited at the St. Francis Xavier Hospital Morgue for preservation.
Korankye further revealed that the deceased, a father of one, was unmarried and hailed from Assin Adiembra but worked in Aworoso. Police have initiated investigations into the incident. He also issued a caution to residents against swimming in the river, highlighting that it has overflowed its banks due to recent rains, making it unsafe.
