Accra: Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has called on the government to declare Ghana's capital, Accra, a disaster emergency zone for one week following the devastating floods that have wreaked havoc across the city after hours of torrential rainfall.
According to Ghana Web, the lawmaker stressed the urgency of the situation in a social media post on June 29, 2026, emphasizing the need for immediate and decisive government action to prevent further loss of life and destruction of property. Fordjour insists that such a declaration would facilitate the activation of all security agencies and emergency response units to conduct coordinated rescue, relief, and recovery operations in the affected areas.
He urged: 'On the ongoing Accra FLOODS: The government must declare Accra a DISASTER EMERGENCY for one week starting today! Without delay, this is the time to activate all security agencies and emergency services in a well-coordinated, full-scale rescue operation and emergency response, while working with the Department of Urban Roads and the Ghana Highway Authority to ensure key access routes are made accessible amid flooded roads across the city. More lives should not be lost, and more properties should not be damaged before action is taken. Sympathies to all affected victims.'
The statement comes as the Greater Accra Region faces severe flooding triggered by heavy rains that began on the night of June 28 and continued into June 29. The floods have submerged major roads, inundated homes and businesses, and isolated several communities due to overflowing drainage systems.
Reports indicate that the disaster has claimed approximately nine lives, and emergency officials warn that the death toll could rise as rescue and recovery efforts continue in the most affected areas. Emergency response teams from the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, and other agencies have been dispatched to the affected communities. Their efforts focus on rescuing trapped residents, evacuating vulnerable individuals, assisting stranded motorists, and restoring access to flooded roads.
Authorities continue search-and-rescue operations while assessing the extent of the devastation. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to remain cautious and cooperate with emergency personnel as the situation unfolds.
