Nsawam:The 200th Anniversary of the Odwira Festival has been launched in Nsawam, aiming to redefine the identity of the town beyond its association with a prison.
According to Ghana Web, the festival, first celebrated in 1826 following Akuapem's victory in the Katamanso War, will be commemorated in 2026 under the national theme 'Honoring Our Heritage, Securing Our Future' and the local theme 'A New Dawn for Nsawam.'
At the launch ceremony, the Chief of Nsawam, Okokroko Nana Kwamena Ansah I, emphasized the importance of storytelling as part of the festival, urging attendees to promote the town's diverse talents and cultural heritage. He encouraged locals to prepare for the celebrations in December and called for unity among government appointees and residents.
The Odwira Planning Committee highlighted Nsawam's strategic location as a center for culture and commerce within the Akuapem Traditional Area. They noted that the town has not held a grand festival for nearly three decades since the passing of Nana Osae Kuma III, although customary rituals have continued.
This year's festival, themed 'December to Remember,' will include traditional, social-impact, and economic-impact activities. Traditional events will feature torch bearing, royal visitations, and a grand durbar. Social-impact activities will offer educational programs, sports, and talent shows, while economic initiatives will focus on trade exhibitions and investment forums.
Two legacy projects were announced a Skills Development Centre for youth training and an Arts and Cultural Village. The Committee is seeking partnerships and sponsorships, promising significant brand visibility for sponsors.
Dignitaries at the launch included the MCE for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Hon. Philibert Amenope Fummey, MP Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, and representatives from various sectors, showcasing broad support for the festival's goals.
