NPP’s Gyewu-Appiah Criticizes Vice President Opoku-Agyemang’s Performance Compared to Predecessor Bawumia

Accra: A member of the New Patriotic Party communications team, Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah, has stirred debate after comparing the performance and public visibility of Ghana's current vice president, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, with that of her predecessor, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to Ghana Web, Gyewu-Appiah, who expressed high expectations for the former Minister of Education, said her current performance has been disappointing compared to her past achievements. Speaking on Accra-based Onua FM's YenNsempa show on May 13, 2026, he claimed that the vice president's performance so far has fallen far below expectations.

Gyewu-Appiah stated, "When Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang became the first female Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, she was very proactive. I therefore believed that, as vice president, she would do even more in her role. However, we are not seeing much of her work. When Dr Bawumia was vice president, his work was evident."

He further drew a sharp contrast with the immediate past vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, whose tenure he claims was marked by high visibility, aggressive digital transformation initiatives, and numerous tangible projects that left an indelible mark on the lives of ordinary Ghanaians. Gyewu-Appiah expressed confidence in Bawumia's future political prospects, stating, "I want to say that in 2029, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will become the next president of Ghana because, as we speak, there is no vice president in this republic. The work Dr Bawumia did as vice president cannot be compared to what is happening now with the vice president. We haven't seen her do anything. Her position as a vice president has been taken away and so you can hardly find her working."

He continued his critique by questioning the current vice president's contributions, saying, "There is no vice president in this current republic. What has the current vice president done? Ask around and let them compare the two. Check our streets; all the cameras fixed were done by Dr Bawumia. Personally, when the woman was at the Education Ministry, I saw her performance. So, I was expecting that same performance in her role as vice president."
