Accra: The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken its grievances to the diplomatic community, accusing the Mahama administration of using state security agencies to target party members. This move comes amid concerns over the treatment of the Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC.
According to Ghana Web, a delegation of NPP executives and supporters expressed their dissatisfaction with the situation during the presentation of a petition. The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, criticized the ongoing detention of Abronye DC, labeling it as unfair and politically motivated. Shaib condemned the indefinite remand of Abronye, arguing that such actions are unacceptable in a democratic society.
Shaib accused President John Dramani Mahama of permitting state institutions to be used against political opponents. He questioned the President's oversight and alleged instructions to state bodies to handle matters in a biased manner. The MP emphasized that the charges against Abronye are bailable, and his continued detention violates basic human rights.
The delegation, acting on instructions from party leadership, including former Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, sought to raise their concerns peacefully. Shaib called for immediate action, demanding the release of Abronye DC and criticizing the judge for prejudging the case.
Shaib warned that targeting opposition members could escalate political tensions in the country. He alleged that the Mahama administration is reviving a 'culture of silence,' reminiscent of past oppressive regimes. He expressed his willingness to face personal risks in his political endeavors, criticizing the government's disregard for the repeal of the criminal libel law.
The NPP's actions highlight the growing political tensions in Ghana as they seek international intervention in what they believe is an unjust targeting of their members.
