Accra: The New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus in Parliament has called for the immediate repeal of the GHS1 Dumsor Levy. Mr. Collins Adomko-Mensah, the Deputy Ranking Member on the Energy Committee of Parliament, argued that the justification for the levy had evaporated since the energy sector debt had been addressed, and the World Bank guarantee restored.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Adomako-Mensah stated at a press conference in Parliament House that the government should urgently present a repeal bill to abolish the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025. The levy, introduced in June 2025, was initially meant to address debts in the energy sector and mitigate power supply issues.
Mr. Adomako-Mensah highlighted that with the global oil price surge and the cedi allegedly no longer absorbing the levy impact, it was unfair to continue imposing it on consumers. He questioned the government's assurance that the levy would not lead to additional costs for petrol or diesel, given the significant projected price increases.
He further emphasized that the government's payment of $1.47 billion to reset the energy sector and the restoration of the World Bank guarantee strengthened the call for the levy's repeal.
