NPP Holds ‘Democracy Under Attack’ Demonstration Amidst Allegations of Political Persecution

Accra: The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is mobilising to stage a demonstration today under the theme, 'Democracy Under Attack.' This protest aims to address what the party describes as 'threats to constitutional governance, the rule of law and the independence of state institutions.' According to Ghana News Agency, the protest seeks to draw national attention to alleged political persecution, selective justice, abuse of state institutions, and growing intimidation of opposition members. Hundreds of party supporters, executives, and sympathisers from across the country are expected to participate in the demonstration through designated streets. The NPP leadership plans to present copies of their petition to the Supreme Court, the Presidency, and Parliament. These petitions will urge the country's constitutional institutions to uphold justice, due process, accountability, and institutional independence, which are seen as fundamental to sustaining Ghana's democratic order. The demonstration follows th e acquittal and discharge of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Sedina Tamakloe Attionu. The NPP alleges that her case raises questions about consistency and impartiality in the administration of justice. Mrs Attionu's High Court conviction and 10-year prison sentence were overturned on July 30 after she was extradited from the United States to Ghana on June 9, 2026. Dr Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, has stated that his office has appealed the Court of Appeal's decision. Meanwhile, Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of Government Communication, explained that Mrs Attionu is in prison custody pending the hearing of the appeal. The NPP has also cited the 'arbitrary arrest, detention and harassment' of some of its members by state investigative and security agencies, alleging that these actions are politically motivated. Mr Henry Nana Boakye, National Organiser of the NPP, emphasized that the demonstration aims to provide a constituti onal platform for citizens to express concerns about developments affecting the country's democratic institutions. Mr Boakye clarified that the objective is not confrontation or disorder, but constitutional engagement. Participants are expected to assemble at the Community Centre before marching through the Efua Sutherland area and the Ako Adjei Interchange to the Jubilee House. He expressed confidence in a large turnout and urged participants to conduct themselves peacefully. The Ghana Police Service has been notified, and security arrangements have been agreed upon to ensure a peaceful event. Security personnel will be deployed along the approved route to maintain public order, regulate vehicular traffic, and provide protection for demonstrators and other road users.
