Accra: The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has called on road contractors to step up their pace of work and complete ongoing key infrastructure projects across the country without delay.
According to Ghana Web, the Minister emphasized during a working inspection of major road projects across Accra, Tema, Dodowa, and surrounding corridors that the government had fulfilled its financial obligations and prioritized payments to contractors. Addressing contractors on site on August 19, 2026, Agbodza stated that the administration of President John Dramani Mahama had authorized more than GHS24 billion to settle inherited arrears and fund ongoing road construction projects.
Agbodza highlighted that President Mahama and the Finance Minister have prioritized payment to road contractors. Since the President took office in 2025, payments amounting to GHS24 billion have been authorized to cover both arrears and ongoing projects. With financial bottlenecks addressed, contractors are no longer able to cite delays in government payments as an excuse for slow progress on projects.
The Minister stressed that priority projects no longer suffer from a lack of commitment in terms of payment. In the past, delays were often due to lack of payment from the government, but this is no longer the case. The inspection forms part of a broader nationwide tour to monitor high-priority infrastructure corridors, including the Accra-Tema Motorway extension, the Adenta-Dodowa road, and the Tema-Aflao rehabilitation project, aiming to ensure value for money and strict adherence to project completion timelines.
